BRIEF HISTORY OF VAIL
The Gore Valley was first a summer retreat for Ute Indians, and then European settlers in the mid-1800s. During World War II, the United States Army created a training center, Camp Hale, in the Gore Range, where the 10th Mountain Division trained for alpine combat. Upon returning from the war, Peter Siebert and Earl Eaton worked to create Vail Ski Resort, which was first opened in the winter of 1963.
